Preparing for Your Procedure
MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI)
MRI is a diagnostic test that uses a strong magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to produce pictures of the inside if your body. Some metals interfere with an MRI examination, so let your technologist know if you have any metal in your body. (see MRI section under "Frequently asked questions").
You will be given a questionnaire to fill out prior to your scan.
Very little preparation is required for an MRI scan. You may eat, drink, and take your medication, except for MRCP scans. Prior to the scan, you are encouraged to go to the bathroom.
You will be asked to remove all metallic items from your person, such as watches, jewelry, hairpins, eyeglasses, and hearing aids. Also, do not take any credit, bank, or parking cards with you into the scan as the scanner will erase the information recorded on the metallic strip. An area will be provided for safe-keeping of valuables.
Wear comfortable clothing such as a sweat suit without any metal snaps or zippers. Avoid hairpins.
Gowns and blankets are available for your convenience, but you will be more comfortable in sweats or other loose-fitting clothing. The scan room is kept quite cold.
Please notify your technologist if you are, or may be, pregnant.
